RECALLCARTY.COM, the cyberspace-based effort to remove Toledo Mayor Carty Finkbeiner from office, is slowly piling up the signatures required to put his ouster to a vote. Along the way, it is using the web page to explore various civic questions.

On the web page last week was a description of "the Carty Complex," an editorial that said, essentially, that the city ended up with the short straw in its deal to keep Jeep in town - mainly because of Carty's insecurities.

"Carty Finkbeiner says to anyone that Toledo is an All-America city is more a statement about his own fears and insecurities than it is about Toledo," the piece begins, outlining a theory that only the insecure seek for others to recognize them as top-notch.

The webpage asks, "Can a person in charge of negotiating a deal with the city's largest employer get the best deal possible when he is operating from a position of fear and insecurity, or might he give away the farm?"

Libertarians, who have criticized the mayor for badly underestimating the city's cost to keep Jeep, are behind the effort to recall him. They also oppose using city money to pay for a new downtown baseball stadium, an item on Mr. Finkbeiner's front burner.

The recall writer finishes his cyber-psychoanalysis of the mayor by linking the two issues. He predicts the city will push hard for a new Mud Hens stadium before voters feel the impact of new taxes that he predicts will be triggered by the city's escalating Jeep costs.

"They need to fund the new stadium before Toledoans realize what hit them," it says.

Time will tell.
